Begin with the silhouette

Silhouette does most of the work. A-line and ballgown shapes balance the hips and photograph generously; sheath and mermaid cuts follow the body and suit structured fabrics; two-piece and separates give you room to adjust proportion. Decide this before you look at a single detail.

Then the fabric and the season

Crêpe and mikado hold a clean line and travel well. Chantilly and guipure lace bring depth and work best with a simple cut. Tulle adds volume without weight. For summer ceremonies, lighter layers and open backs; for winter, long sleeves and a cape or cloak.

The neckline and the back

Necklines decide how the photographs read: a V or square neckline lengthens the torso, a halterneck frames the shoulders, an off-shoulder softens the line. Backs matter just as much — they are what your guests look at during the ceremony.
